1. “The Vuelta must know who won in 2017”
Vuelta is a huge Spanish cycling tour that is held every year. Professional riders from all over come to compete in this prestigious event and many of its cyclists also participate in well know competitions like The Tour De France. Last year, Chris Froome won the Vuelta tour but weeks later there was traces of a banned substance in his drug test. For one or another reason, the results have not been determined and it is almost time for the 2018 Tour. The Director of Vuelta is calling for a resolution to this drug test so that they can crown the true winner.
The Problems: The Drug testing committee is not able to come to a decision, The Vuelta is not able to officially crown a winner and record it in their history books, Chris Froome does not know if he will be disqualified or not, The integrity of the race and its reputation could be hurt.
Who has the problem: The cyclist competing in The Vuelta 2018, The Vuelta directors, Chris Froome’s team, The local community.
2. “Key Miami Dolphins starter is out for the remainder of the season. What it means”
Starting Offensive linemen Josh Sitton is injured and out for the rest of the 2018-2019 season. In Sundays game against the Tennessee Titans Sitton felt a strain in his shoulder and later fell on it. The medical staff took him to evaluate him and it was determined that he had tore his rotator cuff. Sitton wanted to continue playing as he did not feel much pain but doctors warned that if he damaged it more it could be a career ending injury. Sitton is a huge part of the offensive line not only as their best run blocker but also as a veteran, leader, and mentor to the younger players. In a league that has to be able to run the football and protect its Quarterback, Sitton has a very important role and is a commodity in the NFL.
The Problems: Miami Dolphins best Offensive lineman is injured for the rest of the season, The team is missing a leader and mentor that wont be on the field when they need it most, The Dolphins have just lost a big piece of their plan toward success. Josh Sitton is not able to “work” and provide for his family.
Who has the problem: Dolphin fan base, Josh Sitton and his family, The Dolphins organization, The offensive line, all his teammates.
3. “This candidate was campaigning door-to-door. Then the police helicopter came.”
Roosevelt McClary is running for local office in Broward county. He was on his lunch break and was knocking doors, speaking with voters and leaving flyers for people in the nearby neighborhood. McClary accidentally triggered the alarm of a person’s home that was not present at the time. A couple minutes later the police showed up and said he matched the description of a burglar they received and began to ask him questions. McClary who is African American felt as if he was being racially profiled and began to broadcast the encounter on Facebook live. The police although cordial where getting frustrated at McClary’s frustration and assumptions. In the end it was all a misunderstanding between the homeowner and her security system who was not able to fully capture footage of her home and believed that McClary had entered the home when he had only left a flyer on the door.
The Problems: Police being called to a false robbery, homeowner believing she is being robbed, Alarm system not getting adequate video of home and perimeter, possible racially profiling, candidates for local office might be hesitant to canvas.
Who has the problem: the police department, the security system company, The homeowner and family, Roosevelt McClary and local government, residents in the neighborhood.
4. “For the sake of the Everglades, don't expand State Road 836 to South Dade.”
The mayor of Dade county is teaming together with MDX to try and extend State Road 836 in South Dade county. This project not only will cost billions of tax payer money but will also destroy parts of South Florida’s Everglades. The Everglades is an area that most Floridians want to keep as it provides much benefit to the state. It will help with water supply and salt water erosion, etc. MDX is trying to manipulate tax payers to vote for this plan but the author debates it is more beneficial to spend that money toward maintaining the roads and building better transit systems than 6 lane highways.
The problems: Losing part of the Everglades, Construction all along the highways, billions of dollars spent, no improvement in transit systems in dade county, MDX being manipulative.
Who has the problem: Residents of dade county, residents of Florida, construction workers safety, Government officials.

Hey Lucas,
ReplyDeleteI think trying to take away some parts of the everglades to create more roads is taking away from the rich history it contains. I think we need to reverse our ancient historical fact or somehow find a way to create more roads without destroying the everglades. Also, as a sports fan it sucks to see a key Miami starter out for the season, it could really affect the Dolphins season big time!!
Hi Lucas,
ReplyDeleteI loved that you mentioned the Vuelta because I recently watched a documentary on doping for bicycle races and the incredibly unfair advantages that some of these drugs can provide. It defeats the point to even enter if the contestants can't trust the rules to be followed and for conditions to be equal for all within the race. I found it to be a very unique problem to write about and I actually enjoyed learning about this important matter.
